Fall Fly Bonefish Day 3, 9-21-07

Author: Tim Mahaffey

The final results are in, and for the fourth time Carl Hiaasen, fishing with Capt Tim Klein, are Grand Champions of the prestigious Fall Fly Bonefish Invitational Tournament. Checking in with an 11.12 lb downtown brute and another release, the team totaled 4287 points, far out-distancing the field.

Mitch Howell and Capt Dave Denkert held on to second despite struggling with the rest of the field on days 2 and 3 after a great start. First year angler Rick Orcutt, fishing on Capt Duane Baker’s Mirage, caught their second weight fish on Friday to go with another release to slide into the third place and capture first time new angler award.

As I look at the scoresheet for the tournament I’m really amazed as to how poor the overall fishing and results were for the three days. Only 10 weight fish were brought to scale by 25 teams fishing 75 fishing days. This is absolutely incredible, making the domination of the Hiassen/Klein team even that more impressive.

I’ll be bonefishing for the next couple of months, but what I’m really excited about is the upcoming Islamorada Fly Sailfish Invitational Tournament in January. We’ve got a great team put together and have worked hard on our “Atlantic sailfish” technology. This isn’t Guatemala, but, I really think our scores of Atlantics on fly are going to go up dramatically this year.

I’ll be reporting on our practice fishing this Fall as we prepare.

So, until then,
