Practice Day Results(4-10-07)

Author: Tim Mahaffey

Mark and I tuned up for the Spring Fly with a nice 21 shot bonefish day. While the fish were acting somewhat erractic in their behavior, we did manage to catch a 10 1/2 lb fish along with 2 other releases (a bone less than 8 lbs). I also pulled the fly on a 4th fish that absolutely drilled the fly twice but managed to come unbuttoned.

The early morning tailing activity today was really very good. Fourteen of the shots came at tailers and I failed to connect on any of these opportunities. Early morning tailing is somewhat of a guessing game as you can’t always see the fish in the water. The fish today would tail, and then move fast 8-10 feet. Several opportunities were on the plate but the fish overran the fly without seeing it. I should have recognized this behavior sooner and made an adjustment with my strip to match the speed of their movement.

Hopefully the warming trend we are expecting this week will continue to improve the fishing as we get closer to the tournament.

Next practice – Saturday.
Until then,
Tim
